The inaugural Vodafone Lost Island Ultra Marathon Fiji will now become an annual event. This was confirmed by the organiser Marita Manley during a press conference at the Vodafone Headquarters in Tamavua, Suva yesterday.

The five-day multi-stage foot race which begins on April 2 will have 50 international and three local athletes, covering more than 200 kilometres. That is beginning from Yaqara and ending in the Coral Coast.

Manley said such a unique race will target specific markets and runners will have a chance to get a different perspective and enjoy Fiji’s natural scenery.

She added that since this is a first for Fiji, runners should expect a few surprises.

“It will be an annual event and registrations are already opened for next year’s event. Since this is the first for Fiji, runners do not know much about the course so there will be a few surprises along the way.

“This is a very different kind of race and there are not much people out there who can run 200km so we are really targeting a different market.

“It will not only give the runners an exceptionally physical challenge but it will also give them a window into Fiji’s stunning interior and also the vibrant culture in the interior.”

Vodafone Fiji chief marketing officer Rajnesh Prasad said Vodafone is honoured to sponsor such a unique event and this would create more exposure for Fiji in terms of tourism.

“In terms of sponsorship, we have always invested heavily in bigger sports like rugby, soccer and so on but this is something that is unique for Fiji and we have come on board to promote it,” he said.

Vodafone Fiji manager corporate affairs, Shailendra Prasad added that this is about opening up more on the adventure type of tourism and companies who are involved in such businesses will be able to come on board as well.
