Emergency operations conducted  by the Fiji National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) have been boosted by the donation of a special vehicle yesterday.

The Nissan NP300 vehicle was handed over during a ceremony at the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development, Disaster Management and Meteorological Services head office in Suva yesterday.

The donor was the European Union through the Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific (BSRP) Project implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC). The vehicle is worth $59,000.

The vehicle is considered another addition to the ministry’s pool of strategic assets.

In receiving the vehicle, the Permanent Secretary for the ministry, Meleti Bainimarama, said:  “The vehicle will be our flagship when it comes to conducting any awareness such as the conduct of tsunami drills or community awareness exercise in the four divisions.

“It will support the need to improve our visibility in any emergency operations.’’

He said the vehicle will be used in disaster preparedness and response phase to assist the NDMO in transporting people to evacuation centres or to health centres if need be.

The vehicle will also be used for community disaster awareness work and to maintain communication between emergency operation centres in case of telecommunication break down.

Mr Bainimarama said the vehicle would be based at a strategic location to support any disaster operation at divisional and district levels.

The Head of Co-operation at the EU Delegation for the Pacific, Christoph Wagner said: “The EU was pleased to support the Fiji NDMO through the provision of an emergency vehicle which will help to link with evacuation centres or health centres.”
