Officials work on putting together  an international tournament in June

The Fiji Football Association is currently working on organising an international tournament later in the year.

This was revealed by Vodafone Fijian football head coach Christophe Gamel after they arrived from the Philippines on Monday. He said they are planning to invite overseas teams to come and play in Fiji.

“The results are not always positive unfortunately, but we are discussing with Fiji FA of some big matches against international teams sometimes in June,” he said.

“We’re trying to invite overseas teams to Fiji to play in a tournament and it will be a super if we manage to get things done.”

The French national highlighted the Philippines national team are keen to play against Fiji again.

“Every team we play, they want a return match because we make things difficult for them knowing they are better ranked than us,” Gamel said.

“For them (Philippines), we will have to wait for a couple of games because they will be playing Tajikistan for the Asian Cup qualifiers and then we can start liaising with them.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said they are in the preparatory phase to organise something big.

“We are intending to bring one team from Asia and two from the region to make it a four-team tournament to be played either in Lautoka or Suva. This is to allow our national team to play three international matches within a span of eight days,” Yusuf said.

“While everyone will be enjoying the FIFA World Cup, the football fans can also enjoy international football at the same time locally.

“But we are still in the preparatory phase where we are writing letters to invite teams, so we will make a press release once everything is confirmed.”
