More changes are coming for Fijian members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their colleagues worldwide.

Their world leader, newly sustained President Russell M Nelson, announced that the home teaching and home visiting programme had been “retired”.

He said details were being sent to members’ and leaders’ emails in a seven-page document.

Effective immediately the home teaching programme that requires two males to visit, counsel, teach and help a set number of assigned families a month has been discontinued. This will also end the monthly reporting exercise which takes time and paperwork.

The same applies to women in the visiting teaching programme.

President Nelson said at the final session of the General Conference at Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, yesterday (Fijian time) that there should be more ministering and less administering.

He said the change would allow members to deal with “the cunning wiles of the adversary”.

Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, a member of the Quorum of the 12 apostles, endorsed what the President said that there were two big commandments by God. One is to love God with all your heart, mind, might and strength. The second is to love your neighbour.

The change focuses on loving your neighbour Elder Holland said, adding that the primary purpose of the change was to watch over the people in righteousness and to bless them.
