Moroivalu Confirms Royal New Zealand Navy Assistance

A Royal New  Zealand Navy (RNZN) inshore patrol vessel will arrive in Fiji next month to support maritime and fisheries surveillance here.

The RNZN inshore patrol vessel will be deployed to Fiji for three months, between May and August 2018.

Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu last month at a press conference at the Nausori airport while confirming the assistance said Fiji and New Zealand have a rich and tight relationship.

“Fiji and New Zealand have a history of close ties spanning culture, sport, business, defence cooperation and education. Fiji is a regional hub, and a key partner for New Zealand in the Pacific,” Mr Moraivalu said.

“New Zealand’s bilateral engagement with Fiji continues to grow in terms of two way trade, tourism, defence and development in the wake of the democratic elections held in September 2014,” he said.

“Also they will be providing technical assistance to the Fiji Electoral Office in preparation for Fiji’s national elections in 2018.”

New Zealand’s Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters had earlier said they were proud to partner with Fiji in support of the maritime surveillance and securityprogramme.

“We share a deep and abiding interest in supporting the region’s maritime security and ensuring that the Pacific’s natural resources are protected for future generations,” Minister Peters said.

“Fiji has an exclusive economic zone about one third the size of New Zealand and, as fellow island nations, both our countries place enormous importance on the security and protection of our maritime environment,” he said.

“This deployment will further strengthen links between our two countries, detect and deter illegal fishing in the Fiji’s waters.

It will definitely complement regional surveillance coordinated by the Forum Fisheries Agency.”
