Some areas in Navua were not spared by floods caused by heavy downpour associated with Tropical Cyclone Josie at the weekend.

Radha Mani, of Calia, Navua, said her household was among the affected families in the area on Sunday.

She said whenever there was a flood in Navua, Calia would be the first locality to be affected.

“This is not the first time we are getting affected by a flood. This always happens due to blocked irrigation channels in Calia,” she said.

She said if culverts were part of the channel, flooding would be minimised.

On Sunday, she said her husband told her that the floodwater was rising in the river and it could soon reach their home.

“The water came into our compound. We ran around to save our belongings,” Ms Mani said.

She said unfortunately they were only able to save some clothes and electrical appliances.

“Our expensive rugs and carpets, together with our fridge and washing machines were damaged,’’ she said.

“I have a small vegetable garden and because of the floods it gets washed away.”
