A 32-year-old man pleaded guilty in the Suva Magistrates Court yesterday to one count of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The accused appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara and informed the court that he understood the charge and admitted to the facts of his case.

On July 15, 2016 the accused assaulted his seven-year-old son at their home in Raiwaqa. On July 18, 2016 at about 9am his son’s teacher noticed that the victim’s right cheek was bleeding. She asked the victim what happened and the victim said that his father had hit him with a belt.

Upon hearing this, the teacher reported the matter to the Police and the child was taken to the Raiwaqa Health Centre for medical examination where the doctor stated that the injuries received was an inch long laceration on the right side of his cheek.

Magistrate Wickramasekara convicted the accused in court.

Legal Aid Commission lawyer Supreena Naidu requested for more time to prepare  mitigation for his client.

Bail was extended for the accused and the case adjourned to May 28, 2018.

Police prosecutor Corporal Walter Taito appeared for the State.
