The 2018 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony last night at the Carrara Stadium marks the beginning of the biggest event in the Gold Coast’s history.

Over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 71 nations and territories compete for medals in 275 events.

The ceremony signals the beginning of spectacular accomplishments, memorable feats of courage and a moment in which the Gold Coast and Queensland shine on the world stage for the first time.

Representing the Queen, Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales welcomed the athletes.

“I am delighted to welcome you to the opening ceremony of the XXI Commonwealth Games,”he said.

“It is fitting that the Commonwealth Games is known as the ‘Friendly Games’, as one of the world’s friendliest countries has invited us into their homes for this momentous sporting event.

“There are rare opportunities to be so symbolically connected in this way and these games provide one such chance to reflect on the ideals and ambitious that brings us together as one Commonwealth family.

“It reminds us that we may be far away from each other in distance but we are close in spirit, values and friendship,” he said.

President of the Commonwealth Games Federation Louise Martin believes the Games will start a new journey connecting all countries.

“The opening ceremony marks the start of a new journey of connection and understanding, engaging all Commonwealth nations and territories and leaving a legacy for years to come.

“Throughout the ceremony, this spirit will be recognised in many ways from the parade of nations to the competitors Oath,” Martin said.

The Parade of Nations was marshalled by members of Surf Life Saving Queensland.

The teams entered region by region with Europe entered the arena first, followed by the African continent, then the Americas, Asia, Caribbean and the Oceania region.

Fiji was the second team from the Oceania region to enter with medal prospect weightlifter Apolonia Vaivai leading the team as flag-bearer.

The Prince of Wales read the Queen’s message and declares the Games open.

This was followed by Welcome to Earth performance by Australian singer/song writer Delta Goodrem. –
