The Navy is responsible for maritime needs in border control, such as watching over Fiji’s exclusive economic zone and organising task and rescue missions.

This was confirmed by the Navy Commander Captain (Navy) Humphrey Tawake on Tuesday when responding to Opposition parliamentarian Mikaele Lewawere’s query on their role.

He said the navy Research and Rescue Unit in its usual monitoring exercise yesterday had informed the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) about the MV Spirit of Altruism, which ran aground on a reef after leaving Natovi for Nabouwalu on Monday.

“They also shared information on the rescue of passengers on board the MV Spirit of Altrusim after it ran aground on a reef after leaving Natovi for Nabouwalu on Monday,” he said.

He said they were on stand-by for a call from MSAF for help but this did not happen.
