A school in Buiduna, near Nausori, has had to relocate students to a nearby teacher’s quarters because of a landslide.

Gram Sangathan School manager Ravindra Prasad said that Year 1 students had to be moved for safety reasons.

A landslide had ocurred on Thursday just next to a classroom block which houses four classrooms.

Continuous downpour in certain parts of the Central Division has not helped the situation. So the landslide was bound to happen, Mr Prasad said.

The school was affected by an initial landslide in December 2016. Safety precautions entailed the moving of an entire class of Year 1 students to the teacher’s quarters.

“We had to close one classroom and toilet block because of the landslide,” Mr Prasad said.

He said that they did not want to interrupt classes for the students.

Mr Prasad said that the school committee had written to the Ministry of Education in January 2018 to inform it of the situation at the school.

“The ministry has given funds for a new computer and library/laboratory. We will position Year 1 students here until we have this problem solved,’’ Mr Prasad said.

Questions sent to the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry for Education Alison Burchell this week remained unanswered when this article went to print.
