The National Disaster Management Office is advising all Fijians to expect storm surges as Category 3 Severe Tropical Cyclone Keni continues to move southeasterly within Fiji waters.

Storm surges can cause significant flooding and cost people their lives if they’re caught unexpected. Those living on low-lying coastlines in the following areas are advised to take precautions for possible storm surges:

  • Southern and western coasts of Viti Levu
  • Beqa
  • Vatulele
  • Kadavu and nearby smaller islands
  • Moala, Totoya, Matuku, Ono-i-Lau, and the rest of Southern Lau
  • Yasawa
  • Lomaiviti Group

To prepare for storm surges, members of the public are advised to take the following actions:

  • Move to higher ground as a precaution
  • Secure property and valuable assets such as fibreglass boats, outboard motor engines, and empty water tanks
  • Stay away from the shorelines
  • Provide necessary support to children, the elderly, and people living with disabilities

Forecasts are being provided continuously but may change at any time .Members of the public are advised to stay informed for regular updates on all media for further alerts or advisories from authorities.
