Court Grants Bail For Accused Man

An accused person charged with bribery and submitting forged documents was released on bail in the Nasinu Magistrates Court on Monday.

The accused, Kaiyum Hussein, appeared before Magistrate Sufia Hamza represented by a private lawyer.

On the first count it is alleged that on November 15, 2017, Hussein submitted a forged Fiji National University (FNU) national trade test class two certificate together with the result.

He allegedly did this with the intention to dishonestly induce staff of FNU in order to further his studies at FNU.

On the second count between March 1, 2016, and November 15, 2017, in Nadi without lawful authority or reasonable excuse he allegedly provided $500 cash to Aman Avinesh Kumar; a staff member of FNU, with the intention of influencing Mr Kumar in the exercise of his duty as a public official to obtain an FNU national trade test class one certificate.

Police Prosecutor Constable Setareki Mocevakaca served the accused with full phase disclosures.

Magistrate Hamza released him on $1000 bail bond with two sureties who were bonded for a similar sum.

Hussein surrendered his passport to the court. He was ordered not to change his residential address and not to offend while on bail. He was also ordered to report to the Nadi Police Station every Monday and Friday between 8am and 5pm.

A curfew was also imposed between 6pm and 6am daily.

The case was adjourned to June 5, 2018, for plea to be taken.
