The Minister for Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou has commended the performance of weightlifter Eileen Cikanamatana and boxer Winston Hill.

This was after the 19 -year-old gold medal win in the women’s 90 kg category at the Commonwealth Games in Cold Coast, Australia on Monday.

Tuitubou praised Cikamatana for her perseverance, dedication and commitment to become only the fourth individual from Fiji to win gold at the Commonwealth Games and the first at the Gold Coast.

“I am very delighted with Eileen’s performance and I wish to congratulate her on her achievement,” Tuitubou said.

“Eileen becomes only the fourth individual to have ever won a gold medal for Team Fiji at the Commonwealth Games. It is also a proud moment for Fiji Weightlifting – their hard work and dedication had paid off.

“It is also a great day for us as Fijians and as a sport loving country and I can assure you that the Ministry of Youth and Sports will continue to provide support and assistance to enhance all sports in the country.”

Tuitubou also congratulated Fijian boxer, Winston Hill, after he defeated Stephen Newns of Scotland by an unanimous point’s decision in the 69kg boxing quarterfinal match.
