Agathering in Lekutu, Bua, has been told that if men partner and empower women great things can be accomplished.

The comment came from Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa while opening the first resource centre for women of Votua Village in Lekutu, Bua.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said she was thankful to the men of Votua Village for always being there for their women.

“It is good to see that the men are the backbone of the women in this village and this shows great partnership in moving forward,” she said.

“The women can’t do it alone and need the assistance of villagers and church.

“The men need to encourage the women to do more. The opening of the new resource centre shows that team work is already there.”

President of Senivadra Women’s Club, Jese Wati Savou, said the opening of the new Votua Women’s Resource Centre encouraged them to do more.

“Our club started in 2010 and we have faced a lot of challenges, but that didn’t discourage us,” she said.

“Our club consists of 50 women. We started in 2010 by baking bread and selling it to villagers. Whatever profit we were able to get was reinvested into our bread business.

“Last year our bakery was damaged and we hope to get it repaired this year.

“The Ministry of Women donated a four-burner gas stove and two sewing machines. These sewing machines will greatly help us because we take our clothes to neighbouring villages or to Labasa to get it sewn.

“Now the women in the club will task ourselves to sew and charge for our services and we will put the money we make in the bank for future needs.

“We are very happy because this is the first assistance we are receiving from the ministry.

“What happened today has touched us because we remember the struggles we have had to overcome to reach this far.”
