The Indian High Commissioner, Vishvas Sapkal, has thanked the heart surgeons who gave Fijian children a new lease of life.

He thanked them at a dinner hosted at the Indian High Commission on Wednesday.

“We thank the Sai Prema Foundation for such a great cause towards our children,” Mr Sapkal said.

“We are happy to welcome you and really appreciate the work you have been doing for the children of Fiji who have had heart conditions.”

The teams had arrived in Fiji last week under the Sai Prema Foundation.

Mr Sapkal said the surgery was conducted for a group of children born with anomalies in the condition of their hearts.

The Sai Prema Foundation team conducted successful surgeries on 20 children from around the country.

Sai Prema Foundation is a non-government organisation inspired to serve the poor through a three-pronged mission, one of which is to provide meaningful support toward health care.

About 80 children have now been identified by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and the number is expected to grow as the public becomes aware of these services.

The team consists of world class surgeons, doctors and specialist nurses from India, United States, Australia and Oman.
