Land Transport Authority (LTA) had issued a stern warning to all vehicle owners who are illegally modifying the vehicle registration plates.

This came to light after an owner of a taxi was issued with a fine after his vehicle was caught with a fake taxi number plate.

LTA board chairman Vijay Maharaj yesterday said: “Earlier this week, a vehicle was stopped and inspected by an enforcement officer in the Central Division and found the Public Service Vehicle registration LT 5269 had a fake number plate.

“The plate was a sticker, designed to look like a legally registered number plate and operated as a taxi before it was inspected.

“It was one of the many cases with non-conforming number plates found this week,” he said.

Mr Maharaj said the owner of the taxi was brought to the LTA headquarters for interrogation and was issued with a fine.

“This is a criminal offence under the Vehicle Registration and Construction Act 2000,” Mr Maharaj said.

Under the Act, drivers who modify their vehicles illegally, which include the number plates could be fined up to $1000 and even be imprisoned.

Mr Maharaj urged the vehicle owners to go to LTA and get their number plates issued and not to any other vendors.
