A 53-year-old truck driver appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with attempted bribery.

Kamlesh Chand allegedly approached a Police prosecutor based at the Suva Prosecution Office on Tuesday at about 3pm. Chand informed the prosecutor that he was allegedly sent by a Nadera businessman. He then allegedly told the prosecutor that he was willing to pay any amount of money to remove a file from the Prosecution Office.

The accused was immediately arrested inside the Prosecution Office and a report was lodged at the Totogo Police Station. Chand appeared before Magistrate Asanga Bodaragama represented by defence lawyer, Gavin O’Driscoll.

Police prosecutor Constable Monish Chandra objected against a bail application for Chand because he had a pending theft case and the offence was serious.

Magistrate Bodaragama refused bail for the accused and remanded him in custody. The case has been adjourned to May 10, 2018, for his plea to be heard.
