The first regional physical training instructors’ course for defence personnel will take place at the Fijian Police Academy next week.

The month-long programme is a joint effort between the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF), Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

For the 21 participants, a recommended minimum fitness level had been set.

Chief Instructor Flight Sergeant Leo Wiapo of the Royal New Zealand Air Force said participants were expected to have run 2.4km in under 10 minutes 30 seconds for the women and under 10 minutes for men.

The men are expected to do 40 push-ups while the women should be able to do 30.

“That’s the standard we have set. However, we will run the course according to their ability level.”

Out of the 21 participants, six are women.

The programme will focus on assessment of training programmes, nutrition, training methods and other fitness components. Participants will be taught how to organise events and competition within their respective forces.

At the conclusion of the four weeks the newly-qualified instructors will return to their countries equipped with the skills to instruct their own forces in physical training, improving their fitness and health.

The training programme runs from May 7 to June 1, 2018.

The 21 participants are from Niue, Cook Islands, Samoa, PNG, Tonga and Fiji.
