Landing craft Vunilagi muscles on with its operations supplying food rations for people affected by the recent Tropical Cyclones Keni and Josie last month.

Vessel chief mate Lewerua Vodo said they were currently transporting relief supplies to the Yasawa Group, Malolo and Vatulele.

“At the moment those are our areas of operations, but would be commencing with our franchise runs once all is completed,” Mr Vodo said.

“We are operating from the port of Lautoka as this is within the boundaries of Commissioner West,” he said.

“We carry out our tasks from the Commissioner’s instructions.”

The Government vessel also does franchises to Vanua Levu in areas like Labasa, Malau, Cikobia, Naqelevu, Rabi, Saqani, Lakeba, Tawake, Vunikodi, Nukudamu and Cawaru.

“We usually do one month of operations in Vanua Levu and one month from Lautoka to the Yasawa’s during our franchise runs.”

The 45.5m barge can travel with a speed of eight knots with its 14 crew members.

“The vessel can also arry about 30 passengers . It has a gross tonnage approximately between 432 to 435 tons,” he said.

He said the challenge for them was their time away from home and during wet and unfavorable weather conditions apart from that all was good
