Poonam Kohli Ram is holding out hope that her missing husband, a miner at Vatukoula Gold Mine Ltd, is still alive.

A search and rescue team was last night looking for Avinesh Ram, 38, a team leader, and resident of Toko, in Tavua.

Mrs Ram, a former resident of Labasa, said that she was still trying to cope with the heartbreaking news she received.

“At this point in time I cannot reveal anything as I am on the receiving end of the news now,” she said.

The couple have been married since July 7, 2012.

Police said Mr Ram fell into a sinkhole but the company said the incident happened at R1 Underground shaft.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the incident happened at about 10.30am at level 18/03 at the Vatukoula Gold Mine.

She said: “A 38-year-old person of Toko, Tavua fell into the sink hole which is about 18 to 20 meters in height and was buried in the soil.”

Vatukoula Gold Mine Limited Corporate Services Manager and Senior Adviser to the General Manager Dinny Laufenboeck confirmed the incident when contacted last night.

She said: “At this stage I can confirm only that an incident has occurred in our R1 underground shaft. The General Manager is currently still underground and will be joined shortly by officers of the Mineral Resources Department.”

She added further details would be released as soon as investigation was underway.”.
