A 25-year-old man of Nayawa Village, Nadroga, will be sentenced by the Sigatoka Magistrates Court on May 21 for the assault of a Police officer.

Osea Qamasia appeared before Magistrate Tomasi Bainivalu charged with one count of serious assault and one count of being drunk and disorderly. Inspector Mohammed Shameem represented the State.

The court heard on the morning of May 1, at Nayawa Village, Police officers attended to a report in the village lodged against a group of people under the influence of alcohol who were allegedly swearing and making noise.

When the Police team arrived at the scene and the accused allegedly went into the kitchen and struck an officer in the arm with a knife at the time of arrest.

The accused told the court that he was served with the disclosures and understood the charge. He waived his right to counsel and pleaded guilty. Qamasia was remanded in custody.
