Iranian Olympic gold medallist, Hossein Tavakoli, is the Weightlifting Fiji national head coach until the 2020 Olympic Games in Japan.

Hossein won gold at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games in the 105Kg weight category.

He also won gold medals at four Asian Championships between 1997 and 2003

He was better known as one of the most muscular weightlifters at the Sydney Olympics.

“Iran is a very big name in the sport of weightlifting and to have Hossein, who not only has been a coach for high performing athletes but been an Olympic gold medallist himself is a big boost for Fiji,” said WF president, Atma Maharaj.

Hossein was the head coach of the Iranian senior national team for one year between 2015–2016 and helped prepare five lifters for Rio Olympic Games.

Under the guidance of the Tavakoli, Iran won a silver medal at the 2015 IWF World Weightlifting Championships in Houston, Texas.

He also successfully served as the Iranian junior national team for 3 years between 2006 to 2008 and again for one year between 2013 – 2014. Hossein also served as the national head coach for Oman’s weightlifting team.

With WF winning a gold and a bronze medal at the recent Commonwealth Games, together with the elite base of athletes that we have now, it’s only fitting that we raise our own standards and work towards realising our full potential in the sport.

Weightlifting Fiji is confident that Hossein possess the qualifications, skills and experience required to ensure we raise the level of performance in the upcoming competitions.

Hossein will also be involved in talent identification locally and assist the development of coaches during his stay here.
