Fijians affected by the recent floods in the Western Division will soon be receiving assistance from members of the Fijian community in New Zealand.

Fiji’s Honourary Consul in Auckland Harish Lodhia has mobilised disaster relief assistance that is being stored in two twenty-feet containers currently on their way to Fiji from Auckland.

“The assistance from the New Zealand community and our volunteers in Auckland has been amazing and it looks like we will be sending more than two containers of relief items to Fiji,” Mr Lodhia said.

The relief efforts combine the efforts and sponsorship of Neptune Shipping, the Fiji Senior Citizen Group and Friends Reaching Out. It is a humanitarian group dedicated to alleviating the plight of the flood-affected people in Fiji.

Auckland business entrepreneur Jagdish Punja has also been helping with the co-ordination of the relief efforts and assisted the volunteers in filling up the two containers.

The Fijian High Commission in Wellington is promoting the relief effort on its social media platforms and mailing list.

It is also using its contacts with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Suva to lobby for customs duty waivers for the humanitarian assistance coming from New Zealand.

The containers contain new and second-hand clothing, new plastic tubs and buckets, assorted non-perishable packaged food items such as flour, canned baked beans, cooking oils, bottled drinking water, rice and other items.

Much of the assistance is targeted towards affected families in Ba.
