Student Encourages Women To Take Up Engineering Course

‘Being an engineer is quite unusual for women, but they should not look down on themselves and their abilities to do field work.’
Ufemia Naisara has encouraged women to take up engineering courses.
Ms Naisara is a Diploma in Renewable Sustainable Engineering student at the Fiji National University’s College of Engineering, Science and Technology (CEST).
She highlighted opportunities for women during the two-day 2018 Engineering, Science and Technology Exhibition at Derrick Campus in Samabula yesterday.
“There are fewer girls in this field, so I encourage young girls to take up engineering courses,” she said.
“Being an engineer is quite unusual for women, but we should not look down on ourselves and our abilities to do field work.”
Her course was introduced three years ago and she is one of the second lot of students for the programme.
“This is totally a new field of study and it’s got to do with more researches,” Ms Naisara said.
“There are only four students in our class.”
She said what motivated her to do that particular course was the fact that it was in demand.
Ms Naisara added that she was more of an environmental person and she loved being in the field.
“Renewable energy is also one of the Government’s plans in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from Fiji’s power sector which will be accomplished by replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy resources,” she said. Edited by Percy Kean
