Event coincides with Girmit Remembrance Day.

The Global Girmit Institute will be the perfect place to feel the Girmit experience, where people can find the significance of Girmityas as it is now part of Fiji’s history.

These were the words of Fiji National University Professor Rajat Gayneshwar while speaking at the official opening of the institute at Saweni in Lautoka on Monday.

The event coincided with the Girmit Remembrance Day, which was celebrated across the country.

“This is very important for our children to learn about their history and past, their origins and how important it is to know the struggles of our forefathers. Fiji is our home,” he said.

The event was attended by academics, and the Tui Vuda, Ratu Kitione Tavaiqia.

Also present was SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka. He said the idea to form the institute was an important achievement for Fiji.

He also said it would build an integrated society and, remember a group of people that came from a great nation that have come to call Fiji their home.

Institute chairman Ganesh Chand said the institute was an independent organisation which consisted of books about Girmit and Fiji.

“Fiji is now the headquarters of the Global Girmit Institute and we are planning to further expand so that it can be open to the public , for people to come and learn about history of Girmityas,” Mr Chand said.  Edited by Naisa Koroi
