Dreketi football striker Anusil Khem was inspired by his grandfather Khem Prasad, who was a former football rep for Lautoka and Labasa in the 70s, to take up the sport.

The Labasa native also admires the playing skills of Barcelona striker Lionel Messi and hopes to be a great player like him in future.

He started playing the sport when he was 11 years old and his family has been supporting him.

“I attended Korowiri Tovata Primary School and Khalsa College in Labasa where won the U15 title in the IDC,”he said.

“I also played in the U19 when I attended Labasa College.

“One of the players that I look up to as a role model is Messi because I love the way he dribbles the ball. I believe he is the best player in the world.

“My parents supported me and my brother and that is why we enjoy playing football.”

The 24-year old teacher at Bulileka Primary School believes the more he works hard the better he will become

“I played district level in 2011 for Labasa then 2013 for Dreketi then again 2014 for Labasa, 2015 for Nadroga since I got my first posting in Sigatoka. In 2016 I represented Fiji at the Rio Olympics then joined Nadi.

“In 2017 I played for Labasa and I’m now playing for Dreketi team.

“In the Vodafone Fiji FACT next week we are trying to reach the semifinals. I know it’s not easy but our team is training hard.

“One of the best memorable moments in my career was when playing for Nadi FC in the 2016 O-League. We were down by three goals against American Samoa and I scored four goals to win the game.

“I will never forget that.”
