Teachers of Labasa School for Special Education need not fear for the safety of their students.

The Lions Club of Labasa completed constructing the fence and three gates for the school. It was opened on Wednesday.

Lions Club of Labasa president Mohammed Rizwaan said the club spent about $30,000 to complete fencing 500 metres and installing gates within two months.

“A special request was made by the school headteacher Mukesh Chand if we could assist them to secure their school compound,” Mr Rizwaan said.

“We were told that physically and mentally-challenged students would sometimes run away from school or get hurt because the fence was loose and in bad condition.

“We understand the work and the pressure that these ten teachers face daily and we decided to assist them.

“Thanks to our donor who wishes to remain anonymous for donating $40,000 so that we can assist this school.

“This school is the only special school in Labasa and we hold them very dearly.

Last year we donated $4000 worth of materials for the students and we wish to continue to help.

“The club consists of 13 members and I would like to thank them and our project manager Hazeem Hussein for their support.”

Meanwhile, Mr Chand said, the school did receive a grant, but according to the budget the fencing would have been completed in five phases and this would take up lot of time.

“Thus we are thankful to the club for its timely assistance and this will benefit 69 students we have and teachers will not need to worry,” Mr Chand said.

“The environment is now more conducive to the teaching and learning process.”
