The North Korea issue just won’t go away.

Japan’s foreign minister Taroō Kono on Thursday once again urged leaders of the Pacific Island Countries (PICs) to be unified in supporting the sanctions in place against Pyongyang.

While the issue has been hitting international headlines for more than a year, Japan has for the first time roped in the PICs into the debate by bringing it up at this year’s 8th Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM 8)

At a reception dinner hosted by the Japanese Government, Mr Kono said the stance against nuclear-armed North Korea must be stern so as to pressurise Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear programme.

He also hinted that there were discussions underway to curb illegal fishing in the South Pacific.

Japan exports fish from the region and illegal fishing is hurting the country’s interests.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has personally spoken to the head of the Fijian delegation, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, about the two issues in a bilateral meeting that lasted “longer than scheduled”.

Japan’s ambassador to Fiji, Masahiro Omura, sat in on the meeting and confirmed the two leaders agreed on many issues.

He did not elaborate further.

The banquet, with its expensive barbecued meats and kimono-clad Japanese dancers, was a symbolic one.
