Climate Change Threatens Food Security: Kolitagane

The agricultural sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product dropped to just 8 per cent and food imports increased by $100 million after Tropical Cyclone Winston hit Fiji on February 20, 2016.
Ministry of Agriculture Permanent Secretary David Kolitagane said climate change threatened countries’ ability to ensure food security, eradicate poverty and achieve sustainable development.
“With the frequent destructive weather events affecting Fiji, it is our hope that this project will strengthen the agro – ecological and social resilience of vulnerable communities in Fiji from extreme weather conditions,” PS Kolitagane said. He was speaking at the inception workshop of the F$12.4 million (€5m) European Union-funded “Pro-Resilience Fiji- Strengthening Climate Resilience of Communities for Food and Nutrition Security Project in Suva on Friday.
