The Ministry of Fisheries is looking at building Fishing Aggregating Devices (FED) to help maritime villages that depend on fishing as their main source of income.

Minister Semi Koroilavesau highlighted this yesterday while speaking to villagers in Yasawa-i-Rara during a talanoa session.

The project is funded by the Food and Agriculture Organisation through the Ministry of Fisheries.

Mr Koroilavesau said the project had been implemented in some villages in the Lau Group like Ono-i-Lau. The device is used to lure fish and attracts other fish species like marlin, tuna and mahi-mahi.

In the Yasawa group, some fishermen are involved in pakapaka fishery, and Mr Koroilavesau said that the device would come into good use in such types of fishing.

“This device will assist in reducing costs for you. You will be able to fish within the areas where the device is built rather than going miles to look for a good catch,” the minister said.

The ministry also plans to introduce new fishing methods in villages that depend on fishing for their main source of income.
