He may be the oldest player playing in the Vodafone Fiji FACT 2018 tournament.

But instead defender Taniela Waqa is the backbone of the Labasa football team. Waqa is the one, flashy players like Christopher Wasasala, Anare Apenisa, Edwin Sahayam and Akuila Mateisuva look to when the going gets tough.

Speaking to SUNsports, Waqa said he has been playing football for over 20 years.

He started his career at the age of 16 in Lautoka where he played alongside his older brothers Maika Waqa and Bakalevu Moceimereke.

The 35-year-old said like any footballer, support from friends and family members is one of the key factors that has helped him overcome various challenges in life.

“Many don’t know the challenges we footballers go through. Its things like having to balance training, work and family time. Sometimes we get injured but only thing that keeps me going is the passion to play the sport,” the Taveuni native said.

“Support is very important, I was fortunate to have my family and friends who helped me along the way.

“It’s over 20 years of playing and with every game I play it is as if it’s my first. Football is an exciting sport and one of the reasons I played was because I got the chance to represent Labasa.”

Waqa said winning the Interdistrict Championship in 2011 was something he would always cherish.

“It was after a lapse of 16 years. To be part of the winning team that won the IDC for Labasa is something I will remember for the rest of my life.”

Waqa added that playing Nadi in the semfinal of the Vodafone Fiji FACT would be a daunting task and they need to prepare well.

Labasa will face Nadi at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori at 2pm on Saturday.
