Cane Farmers To Get Fourth Payment Tomorrow

Cane farmers throughout Fiji will tomorrow receive their fourth cane payment of $15.14 per tonne.

The Government topped up the payment with $6.30 to the $8.84 payment by the Fiji Sugar Corportion to bring the total 2017 cane payment to farmers so far to $81.10.

The farmers would receive one more payment, known as the ‘washout payment’ in October which would then make it the best cane payment farmers have received during the past five years.

The farmers have received an average of $82 per tonne during the past five years.

Sugar Industry Tribunal, Devanesh Sharma said this would bring farmers proceeds for 2017 to $124,763,676 (excluding the Government’s $6.30 top up).

When contacted yesterday, Sugar Cane Growers Council acting chief executive officer Sunil Deo Chaudhary thanked the Government for providing tremendous support to our cane growers.

“SCGC applauds the Government for giving $6.30 per to top up the fourth cane payment of $8.84 which brings the total payout to $15.14,” he said.

“This will immensely assist the growers in meeting their family needs and to prepare for the upcoming 2018 crushing season.

“With this lucrative payout, I urge the growers to start with the necessary crushing preparations, hold gang meetings and submit the MOGA in time.”
