The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Permanent Secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta has urged mothers to come forward if they need help in areas of child care.

Dr Koroivueta was responding to the recent case where the body of a fully-formed baby was found by a farmer in Nabitu, Nadroga last Friday.

He said they should not hesitate in contacting the ministry.

“They should not be doing anything that is inhumane which is to abandon the babies,” Dr Koroivueta said.

“These such cases are a big concern for the ministry and everyone. It concerns our country as a whole.

“Our constitution protects the rights of the children. Our advice to mothers who are having problems and difficulties, please remember that there is help available.

“We can provide the support they need but not to let go of their babies.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the identity of the mother was still unknown as investigations continue. The baby’s body was taken to Sigatoka Hospital. A post-mortem is yet to be done to determine the cause of death.
