Regardless of sexual orientation or sex characteristics human rights are universal and LGBTQI people are entitled to the same respect and protection as everyone else.

This was the comment by United States Embassy political adviser James Bjorkman during the opening of the Human Rights Pacific Conference at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa on Denarau yesterday.

He said: “Regardless of sexual orientation or sex characteristics Human Rights are universal and LGBTQI people are entitled to the same respect and protection as everyone else.

“Be open but not abrasive, be proud of who you are but humble enough not to think you’re above others. Forgive those who make mistakes, who think or say things as they begin to learn. Trust me, they will make mistakes. Lovingly help them open their minds rather than violently fight their ideas.”

The conference aims to increase community acceptance of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and expression.

“Let us break down institutional and social stigma and discrimination against LBGTI people. It will be painful as we find points of friction,” Mr Bjorkman added.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) Regional Goodwill Ambassador, former Fijian President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, said: “But we need to take into account inclusivity for everyone to understand and contribute to these talks and this movement.”

The five-day conference will focus on advancing human rights related to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression in the Pacific.

About 150 delegates from the Pacific and international countries are attending the conference.

The main objective is to develop a roadmap to achieve LGBTQI inclusion in the Pacific by 2030.

The conference ends tomorrow.
