Six Geared With New Walkers And Crutches

Six people with disabilities were blessed with mobility aids by the Labasa District Youth Council yesterday.
Families of the recipients and Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons (FNCDP) staff representing their members were present at the Ministry of Youth and Sports department to receive the equipment.
The handing over was done by Ministry of Youth and Sports divisional manager northern Walter Matalau.
Labasa District Youth Council chairperson Mohammed Shanil said the council having 30 registered clubs from Labasa, Seaqaqa and Nadogo collected money to buy three walkers with wheels and four crutches.
“The cost of one walker with wheels is around $210 and one crutch would be $250,” Mr Shanil said.
“We had sent out application forms to the poorest of the poor persons living with disability and in desperate need and we were able to provide for six persons.
We have done this for the first time and we will continue to help other persons with disabilities.”
The council carried out a lot of projects and programmes and a recent one was the distribution of groceries to ten families in Labasa and distribution of vegetable seeds to nine families that were affected by flash floods.
Fiji National Council for Disabled Persons staff Monisha Rao and Eka Loco, while receiving the walkers with wheels, thanked the council for their assistance.
Mr Matalau said: “We are here for you and look forward to working with you in the future in regard to training and assistance as such,” Mr Matalau said to the recipients.
“We really need your patience and understanding at the same time.”
