Minister of Youth and Sports Laisenia Tuitubou reiterated yesterday that winning is not as important as participation and the love for the sport.

Tuitubou made the statement while officiating at the inaugural Punjas Biscuit Oceania Tennis Federation’s Pacific Nations Cup 2018 at Lautoka Regional Tennis Centre, in Nadovu Park.

“I would like to encourage participants to put on their best performance,” he said.

“A line from an unknown author said, ‘Life is like a game of tennis; the player who serves well seldom loses.’

“Tennis is a lifelong sport. It is a low impact and non-contact sport. It is one of the oldest sports which have grown into a global sport.”

Tuitubou added that individual sports like tennis can be particularly beneficial to help develop self-esteem, focus and social skills while encouraging physical activity.

“Tennis is also often considered the best first sport because it teaches physical literacy and can help an individual to develop the greatest number of skills required by the greatest number of other sports and activities.”

OTF president Cyrille Mainguy commended Tennis Fiji for hosting the first ever tournament in the region.

Punjas Group marketing manager Gopal Jadhav said they are excited about our involvement in the 2018 OTF Nations Cup Pacific.

“To the people of Lautoka and surrounding districts we encourage you to take advantage of this wonderful international spectacle and come enjoy a day of exciting competition,” Jadhav added.
