The Permanent Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, Naipote Katonitabua, has commended the Rewa Provincial Council for aligning its work with Government policies.

He made the remarks at the close of the two-day council meeting at Burebasaga Village yesterday.

The council approved a new budget of $371,075, expenditure of $368,594 and a surplus of $2481.

Mr Katonitabua said the council could invest the surplus.

He said they were happy with the way the council was run.

Ro Teimumu Kepa, the paramount chief of Rewa (Gone Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi) called for transparency in the use of the budget.

OTHER ISSUES:

Rewa-Vutia Road

Fiji Roads Authority’s Jese Morgan said they were still waiting for some landowners to give their consent before work could begin. Ro Teimumu asked the landowners to speed up the process and forward the papers to the provincial office.

Education

Concern was raised about the low academic results in primary schools. Council chairperson Uraia Waibuta said schools should learn from Toga District School, which topped the exam results.

He said strong parental support was vital for students to succeed.

Village headmen

Mr Katonitabua stressed that all turaga-ni-koro (village headmen) were apolitical, which meant they could not participate in politics. He said their responsibility was to facilitate things in the village.

He said village headmen who breached the rule would be dealt with accordingly.
