The Indian government has committed $1.7 million to Fiji’s Small and Medium Enterprises (SME).

This is part of the $10.3 million assistance which the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced during his trip to Fiji in November 2014.

The cheque amount was $1,704,586.80 which was handed over by the Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Vishvas Sapkal and Indian Minister for State for Health and Family Welfare Ashwini Kumar Choubey to the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum on Thursday.

After receiving the cheque, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the micro-finance assistance that was given had tremendously changed the lives of thousands of Fijians.

He said that people do not have enough capital to go a step further.

“By giving them access to $1000 maximum, we were able to help them move up to the next stage.

“We greatly appreciate what Mr Modi and the Indian people have done,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Mr Sapkal said the Indian Government had already given US $2.2 million (FJ$4.5m) which had been distributed to 4752 Fijian beneficiaries.

“This grant is for Fijians who would like to start small medium businesses like poultry, carpentry, food vendors, etc.

“We had seen in the past that many Fijians who had received the grant have immensely benefited from it which was distributed by the Ministry of Trade and Tourism.

“We are really happy to be committed to the development of Fiji,” Mr Sapkal said.
