David Young sets a new record in the 400metres freestyle during the National Schools Swimming Championship at the Damodar City Aquatic Centre in Suva yesterday

The Learning Centre’s 13-year old clocked 5.18:59 minutes while Rhys Cheers recorded 5.27.85 in 2014.

Young will feature in the 200 individual medley, 200m freestyle and 200m breaststroke today.

“My favourite event is the 200m breaststroke,” he said.

“I first played hockey before I took up swimming.”

The Savusavu native was inspired by his mother.

“My mother Morika Hunter competed in the State finals in the United States and she inspired me to take up the sport.

“I want to be an Olympian in swimming in future.

“Breaking a record set by Cheer gives me great joy and it doesn’t end here. I will keep trying my best and see how far I will go.

“Competing with other schools is really fun and very enjoyable.”

He encourages young swimmers not to lose hope and to keep trying their best.
