Fourth cane payment ‘timely

Sugarcane farmers in the Northern Division have acknowledged the Government for their support after receiving the fourth cane payment on Friday.
Government increased the price to $15.14 per tonne; before the farmers were getting $8.85 per tonne.
Former executive officer for Fiji Cane Growers Association, Mohammed Rafiq, said the top-up had come at an opportune time for the farmers.
“The farmers are very thankful to the Government for increasing the price of a tonne especially when harvesting season is just around the corner,” Mr Rafiq said.
“The money that is given will enable the farmers to repair their tractor, pay labours and clear any debts they have.
“The needs and wants of the farmers are met. Farmers can buy things for his family. Without the Government intervention this wouldn’t have been possible.”
