The Northland rugby team are on track to re-claiming their spot in next year’s Skipper Cup Premiership competition. The Tailevu North-based side edged out Macuata 17-12 in the Vodafone Vanua Championship at Subrail park, Labasa yesterday.

What happened: The visitors had a tough time as Macuata applied the early pressure. They managed to settle down and got the first try in the 15th minute to Banuve Tubunaruarua which was converted Jese Tubunaruarua for a 7-0 lead. Macuata hit back in the 34th minute when Paula Bukavece scored their first try which was converted by Joni Koroilagilagi. They extended their lead in the 37th minute when Jolame Rita ran in their second try.

Halftime: Macuata 12-7 Northland

Northland came out firing in the second half as Rusiate Ereloa scored their second try in the 50th minute with Tubunaruarua adding the extras as they led 14-12.

Northland continued to pressure the hosts as they struggled to keep up with the pace of the game. Northland extended their lead from a Etika Rasere penalty to seal the win.

Comments: Northland coach Watisoni Ratulevu said: “I’m happy with how the players played and we’ll need to improve on few areas before we play against Cakaudrove next week.”

Macuata coach Sevina Nanuku said: “I’m hap¬py with the way the players have improved from the last game. Northland is not an easy team to play against but I’m glad that the boys played to the last minute.
