USA Fijians Donate Library Books For Maritime Schools

More than 30,000 library books will be distributed to schools in Vanuabalavu, Koro and Gau.
These books that were donated by the Fiji Association of Washington DC were received by the Library Services of Fiji last month.
The books are suitable for kindergarten and primary schools because they include easy readers, junior fiction and non-fiction books and junior references.
They also include general non-fiction, references and novels, suitable for secondary schools.
Library Services of Fiji director Merewalesi Vueti said the donation had good mixture of books and covered a wide range of knowledge discipline.
The donation also contains flash cards that will be helpful for Fijian students to learn about the world around them.
“These are the kind of resources we need in schools, but are not available from local book suppliers,” she said.
“They also include ‘The Super 3: Information skills for young learners’ which is a good resource for students in year 11, 12, and 13, to help in their basic research skills.
“These resources are relevant as supplementary resources to schools, allowing students to read outside the normal prescribed text for more knowledge and information, to better understand the subject and the world around them.”
Meanwhile, more than 47 schools and kindergartens in Viti Levu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and Ovalau, have been given books already.
Fiji Association of Washington DC president Isoa Rabuli said he was happy to hear that the books had been widely distributed and benefitted many schools which are the target of assistance.
“The books were collected through a library book drive by the association in the greater Washington area last year after we learned that there was a big need for library books in Fijian schools,” Mr Rabuli said.
Most of the books collected were donated by Fairfax County Public Schools of Virginia.
