IN HAPPIER DAYS... Donisha Murti.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that a 22-year-old nursing student died recently as a result of Meningococcal (Men-C) disease.

This latest death, at Labasa Divisional Hospital last Wednesday, brings the confirmed Meningococcal disease related death count to five so far this year.

Donisha Murti, who was a final year student of Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education, was taken to Labasa Hospital by her colleagues after she complained of body pain, fever and vomiting. After a few hours during treatment young Donisha died.

Her father, Devendra Murti, of Lautoka, flew to Labasa the next day.

He told the Fiji Sun that the advice given by the medical professionals was that his daughter had died from Meningococcal.

“They had carried out a blood culture and found positive Meningococcal,” Mr Murti said.

“I was shocked and heartbroken thinking how it was possible that only my daughter suffered from Meningococcal.

“I was told that there would be no post mortem examination so on Friday I brought the casket in a plane to return home.”

He is very sad and regrets sending her daughter to Labasa.

“My wife and I have been looking after her one-year and eight-month-old baby girl and I don’t know what I will tell her when she grows up,” he said.

Men-C has been in Fiji since 2016 but he hopes that there won’t be more people suffering from the deadly disease.

Donish’s funeral will be held tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, in a statement, said that it would continue to urge members of the public to protect themselves and their loved ones because there was a need to help fight off the deadly disease. Shratika Naidu
