The family of the late Warrant Officer Class One Niko Komaiasa Ralagi remembered his passing one year ago yesterday.

WO1 Ralagi, 50, died on June 3 last year while serving with the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), in Syria.

His wife, Salanieta Ralagi, described her late husband as a committed and a hardworking man.

“We really miss him and today marked one-year of his death,” she said.

“When it comes to work or church, he will never complain or give excuses not to attend. He was so committed.

“He died of heart attack.”

Ms Ralagi said her late husband was a healthy man and she never thought he would die of any sickness.

She believes that it was God’s calling.

She added that in their 25 years of marriage he had spent 14 years on tours of duty to missions overseas.

They have seven children with the youngest being three-year-old.

Before his death WO1 Ralagi was a Senior Operations Warrant Officer at the RFMF Operations Cell at the Land Force Command headquarters.

As a decorated Fijian soldier he had served in several UN Peacekeeping Missions.

He was also the recipient of the General Service Medal, MFO Peacekeeping Medal, UNIFIL Peacekeeping Medal, UNAMI Peacekeeping Medal, UNMISET Peacekeeping Medal, UNDOF Peacekeeping Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.

Recently, Fiji’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Satyendra Prasad, received the Dag Hammarskjold medal on behalf of the late WO1 Ralagi’s family.

DEPTFO reports said Mr Prasad was humbled and honoured to receive the medal on behalf of the family of the late Warrant Officer Class One Ralagi, a Fijian UN Peacekeeper who died while serving at the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in Syria last year.

The medal was presented by the UN secretary-general Antonio Gueterres.

It was in recognition of the sacrifice of the late WO1 Ralagi, who had a very distinguished career with the RFMF and had served in various UN Peacekeeping Missions. Edited by Percy Kean
