As a child, Muniratnam Pillay toiled away on his father’s seven-acre sugar cane field with his six brothers to pay for his school fees.

Little did he know that there is a bigger world waiting for him beyond the green valley. Today he is the director of engineering at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay.

The 35-year-old has now added another feather to his demanding career – where he won a 2017 Global Engineering Leadership Award–Asia Pacific.

Mr Pillay was awarded at the Marriott International APEC Engineering Conference in Phuket, Thailand which took place from May 12 to 16.

The Global Engineering Leadership (GEL) Award recognises leaders from across the globe who excel in Engineering.

“It was a great beginning after all, while those days of cutting cane during the school days, I did not dream to come this far. I dedicate this achievement to my six brothers who would cut cane by each other’s side. I moved on to tertiary and they assisted in paying my fees. I was very focused on my studies too.

“I have been inspired by various properties chief engineers and hotel managers to excel so I just used that to assist me in my career which is a lifetime achievement.”

Mr Pillay was one of the first to join Fiji Marriott Resort’s preopening team in January 2017. He has worked at various properties such as Nestle, Tanoa Hotel, Sheraton Fiji (including Samoa properties) and Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) where he started as a Quality assurance officer.

He attended Swami Vivekananda College before completing Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Degree programme) which included member of the Robot Competition in South Korea in 2004.

A main topic of the Conference was Sustaining Responsible Operations.

Fiji Marriott Resort general manager Silvano Dressino said Mr Pillay is an accomplished leader who not only brings an exceptionally high level of personal commitment each and every day, but also motivates the team he leads to achieve outstanding results within the resort.

He added that by taking great care of the associates, guests, and Marriott business stakeholders, Mr Pillay is an inspiration to all of them.

Mr Dressino said: “One of key focus areas of Marriott International is to open the world of opportunities for our associates and to help them with career progression.

“Being an FNPF owned property; Fiji Marriott Resort is very keen to develop local talent. We are proud that Muni was recognised globally for his leadership and professional skills, and was selected among all of the applicants from the Asia Pacific Region. It is inspiring to see that local Fijian talent is recognised for exceptional achievements.” Edited by Epineri Vula
