Dredging works at the Sigatoka River mouth is expected to clear out 750,000 cubic metres of silt within the next four months.

Minister for Waterways Mahendra Reddy while launching the second phase of the project yesterday said the cost of the project would be over $1 million.

Nasigatoka District Representative, Joveci Nakubu, said villagers within their district had witnessed an improvement in drainage since works began.

“Before our villages use to get flooded because we are located next to the Sigatoka River. We want to thank Government for doing a tremendous job even there are few environmental impacts,” he said.

The works are currently carried out by China Railway First Group and dredge works are expected to extend 1.6 kilometres upstream.

Mr Reddy said: “This is one of the major projects we are currently working on to ease the water flow in rivers.

“In the first phase of the project we have widened the mouth of the Sigatoka River where most of the deposits from upstream settle.”

He said the third phase of dredge works would be included in the next budget.
