Fijian missionary Pastor Sakaraia Mataka and his 15-year-old son, Paula Tekei Mataka, will be buried in Kenya after they died in an aircraft crash near the capital, Nairobi, on Tuesday afternoon.

This was confirmed by Pastor Mataka’s elder brother, Alipate Matadigo, 60, as he discussed funeral arrangements with the Fiji Sun yesterday.

Mr Matadigo said the Kenyan branch of the Christian Mission Fellowship International (CMFI), under which Pastor Mataka and his family served in the African nation for 10 years, pleaded with the extended family to have the burial there.

The father and son are expected to be buried in the agricultural town of Kitale in the northern Rift Valley where they were living.

“The church branch in Kenya had pleaded to have the burial done in Kenya,” he said.

“My sister-in-law (late Pastor’s wife Serafina Mataka) rang me and asked about the church’s plea, so I told her, ‘as long as it is OK with you’.

Mr Matadigo said the family in Fiji was at peace now, knowing there was nothing that could be done to bring his brother and nephew back.

“My only worry now is my sister-in-law and the children, but she had called me and told me that she was at peace.”

The late Pastor Mataka and his son were on their way to Nairobi in what was supposed to be their first stop on their journey to Fiji for a month long visit to families in Labasa when the incident happened.

The last time the Mataka family were in Fiji was in 2015.

Pastor Mataka and his son are survived by wife and mum Serafina Nacika and three children, Elisapeci Ramanu, 23, John Naitaka, 6 and Suliana Garcia, 2.

A delegation from Fiji and other nations will attend the funeral.
