The Fiji Roads Authority has long term plans for the repairing and refurbishing of wharves, jetties and bridges in the Lomaiviti group, said FRA Acting Programme Manager for Bridges, Jetties and Crossings Nasir Khan.

“Koro island jetty is already being planned for replacement which will be phased out over a two year period,” Mr Khan said.

He said the design would be done first and then construction would follow. This is planned from early 2019 until 2021.

“For Levuka, FRA will revisit the Buresala jetty and identify other potential sites that can be developed for jetty, beginning in the next financial year.”

Mr Khan said the removal of the Sinu-i-Wasa I at the Levuka wharf was the responsibility of the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited.

Roko Tui Lomaiviti Penijamini Velitokaduadua said the three bridges at Levuka town, Waitovu and Vuma were being refurbished right now and was nearing completion.

“The bridges in Levuka town, Waitovu and Vuma have been almost completed but needs one or two things before it will be commissioned and opened,” Mr Veli Tokaduaua said.

The wharf in Levuka which had been battered during the Cyclone Winston in February, 2016 was still very vulnerable and in disrepair and was unsafe with the Sinu-i-Wasa I sunk near the wharf.

According to an FPCL worker the Sinu-i-Wasa I was out of the way at the Levuka wharf after it was sunk about 30 metres off the Levuka wharf.
