The Fiji Meteorological Office has clarified reports that their weather radars were not operational.

FMO director Ravind Kumar said the weather radars based in Nadi and Nausori were not working because of technical problems.

The Nadi weather radar is undergoing an upgrade, which is expected to be completed by the end of July while the Nausori weather radar had technical issues on Monday.

He said personnel from the technical department were working on the issue to determine reasons for the faults.

“As soon as our technical teams have completed their assessment and compiled their reports of the fault then we will be able to know by when they will come back online,” Mr Kumar said.

“The Nadi weather radar is down because of the ongoing upgrade. We expect this to be completed by the end of July.

“The primary source of information is coming from the automated weather source on the ground and manual stations complimented by the satellite.”
