Faith-Based Groups Bind For Noble Cause

Different faith groups in Labasa have come together with a common purpose and that is to keep Labasa Town clean.
On Thursday, a representative from each faith denomination had a meeting in Labasa to come up with ideas on how to ensure this project could be a success.
The group was formed in April, 2018.
The Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam executive officer, George Vegnathan said he was glad to be part of the group.
“The Catholic Church initiated this move and they contacted us and they presented us with what they want the outcome to be,” Mr Vegnathan said.
“They also circulated brochures on how we can improve our surrounding by keeping it clean. We are happy to be part of something that will benefit everyone.
“It is a bold move and together we can raise our concerns to Non-Government Organisations (NGO), Government and the communities. There is a lot to be done and this will not only be for this year but will continue in years to come
“This is one way we can work together and see an area that we can address which concerns all of us.”
Department of Environment representative, Tevita Vuniwaqa said they would facilitate the group in every way possible.
“This is a good idea, especially different denominations doing something for the environment,” Mr Vuniwaqa said.
“This is also one way to work towards ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’
“We will assist them; facilitate their clean up campaigns and all their future programmes they wish to be involved in. Their sign boards have been approved and will be erected around Labasa Town.”
The faith groups that are involved include: The Salvation Army, Anglican, Methodist, Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam, Macuata Muslim and Catholic Church.
